U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland discussed El Salvador’s Bitcoin law with President Nayib Bukele during her visit to the tropical country on June 30. Nuland emphasized that Bitcoin should be “well regulated” in the country:

“I told the president that whatever El Salvador chooses to do, you have to make sure it’s well-regulated, transparent and accountable, and you have to protect yourself against malicious actors.”

He also stated that the US is “looking hard” on crypto in the wake of recent ransomware attacks. Nuland also hopes that El Salvador can reach a mutual understanding on Bitcoin with the International Monetary Fund.
